The Best Answers You Can Give During a Job Interview

The Best Answers You Can Give During a Job InterviewThe Best Answers You Can Give During a Job InterviewIf youve been in the job market for any length of time, youre probably familiar with the standard approach that prospective employers take when it comes to delving into a candidates worthiness for an open position. The interrogationsorry, we mean bewerbungsgesprch, starts off with a review of your qualifications, the job description and a discussion of essential background topics. After the initial get to know you introductions are completed, things take a turn way south with the introduction of THE questions. Anyone whos seen the inside of a conference room knows what we mean here. The dreaded, open-ended intellectual proddings that were designed by someone, way back when, who thought that leaving things open-ended was the best way to pry into the depths of a candidates personality. Yeah, were not exactly big fans of these types of interview tactics, but your next employer fruchtwe in likely will be which means you should be prepared to answer in order to have the best shot of landing that job offer. Dont worry, though, weve got strategies and tips for tackling the answers like a pro.Tell Me About YourselfThis tricky little query will most likely inject itself during the early part of your interview, possibly as an icebreaker. While you may be tempted to talk about your penchant for knitting or overshare the fact that youve broken 15 bones and had your appendix out, dont be fooled by the casual nature of the question. Interviewers are looking for character traits that make you the perfect candidate for the job both from an experience and personality perspective. Think about what traits you may have that achieve this end. For example, if the position calls for management experience, discuss your role leading the local boy scouts or the fact that youre the head of your local HOA. Another perfectly acceptable trait is to be straightforward and mention your qualif ications, background, and skillset in a non-illustrative way. Read the situation and your potential interviewer to decide which tact to take.Tell Me About a TimeThis is one that can hang up even the most seasoned of interviewees. When your prospective employer is asking for a specific time you demonstrated x, y or z skill or had to accomplish a specific task, be sure to use this as an opportunity to match up your prior experience with the job description at hand. You most likely have plenty of answers you could roll out if youve been in the career world for any length of time. Our biggest tip here is to prepare by reading and then re-reading the traits called for in the position you are applying for and identify several disclosable situations that best reflect these qualities.Greatest StrengthsWe hope you like talking about yourself because this is the awkward interview question that will have you dolling out self-congratulations like a well-seasoned pro. While this may seem like a n o-brainer of a question, there are a few important points to remember. First, the traits your interviewer is after have less to do with your windsurfing hobby and more to do with those financial reports youre going to need to review. Keep this in mind and keep your strengths relevant to the job description. Additionally, be prepared to back up any descriptors with an example, in case of the inevitable tell me more follow-on. If you claim to have incredible attention to detail, line up an example to follow or, better yet, insert a brief one into your initial answer.Biggest WeaknessesWe saved a real humdinger for last. The tell me about your biggest weaknesses is the inevitable partner in crime to the request to outline your strengths. Potential employers often view this as an area to trip you up, but with a little preparation, you can actually turn this into a golden opportunity to illustrate your skills. When choosing weaknesses to speak to, aim for qualities that you possess in spad es but are better in moderation. For example, having the ability to herausforderung solve is a great thing but wasting too much time looking for a solution isnt the best use of time. Try explaining that you often find yourself too tenacious in wanting to see things through to the end but that youve worked on recognizing when its best to bring in back-up in the form of your manager or co-workers opinion in order to compensate and help you problem solve. While open-ended job questions can be a tough subject to tackle for many interviewees, with a little preparation savvy candidates will have nothing to fear. Remember that questions throw the ball back into your court and provide opportunities to promote your best qualities. Use this to your advantage and youll be landing that job of your dreams in no time.

Women leaders -- the untapped talent in your organization

Women leaders -- the untapped talent in your organization Women leaders the untapped talent in your organization “The business case is clear: the research and data show that better results are achieved when you have both an inclusive environment and diverse teams.” ~  Sandra Bang, chief diversity and talent strategy officer at Shearman Sterling LLPIs your organization doing everything it can to ensure more  women are promoted  to positions of leadership? Probably not, but why? Perhaps you’re in a position where you have more candidates than positions, but in today’s competitive market, that seems doubtful. More likely, no one has put in the commitment it takes to identify, train and elevate women into key roles.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  In my corporate training, “The Invisible Leaders: How to Find Them and Let Them Shine,” I explain how you can excel, both individually and as an organization, by leveraging those hidden leaders already working for you. It’s much more than just “the right thing to do,” but if you or someone in your senior leadership need convincing of the power women leaders bring, read on for just some of the reasons why you need to start valuing your untapped talent right now.1. Incorporate diverse thinking and unique insightsEvery leadership book on the market will advise you to surround yourself with a team of people who both think like you and who think differently. Why? Diverse thinking is a cornerstone of great management because it helps us gather new ideas, find our blind spots and problem-solve most efficiently. Why then, would we undervalue women leaders, who bring great insights and creative thinking to the table? If you truly want a dynamic, innovative team,  don’t underestimate what your untapped female talent can do  for you and the organization. The best discussions will be had when there are a variety of perspectives in the room.2. Improve retention of valuable women leadersPeople leave organizations w hen they feel they are undervalued, when there are no opportunities, and when they see dim or stagnant prospects for the organization itself. If all your company has to offer its women employees is a grim future where they are passed over and unappreciated for all they do, they’ll leave. Instead, keep those valuable team members. Find them, help them advance, and enlist them in the effort to grow the numbers of women rising in the ranks of your organization.3. Create improved productivity and enhanced resultsDo your employees feel valued? All of them? If not, why not? We all work our best when we feel we are a part of something important, and that our effort matters. Unfortunately, not all organizations make notice of women and their endeavours, especially if they tend to achieve results in quieter or less boisterous ways. Imagine if,  no matter who you were or what your work style, you felt that your company noticed and valued your work? The effect on quality and productivity acr oss the whole organization would be undeniable.   If you saw faces like yours among the ranks of senior leadership. If people “like you” were notably valued, you might be more motivated to do truly great work.4. Encourage recruitment of more brilliant talentImagine what will happen when you gain a reputation for  offering leadership training  and advancement to capable women. Once word gets out that opportunities abound, the best and the brightest will seek you out whenever positions are posted. Recruiting becomes significantly easier if the untapped, overlooked hidden talent of other organizations realize they can come do great work with you and be valued for it. When enterprising, motivated and brilliant women see themselves represented amongst the ranks of your leadership, they’ll know they’ve found a place where they too can achieve great things â€" a win-win for employees and the company. Now that you’re armed with a host of reasons why discovering the untapped women t alent already working in your organization, start making a plan on how you are going to identify, coach and elevate the women already doing great work. You’ll gain a great reputation for diverse thinking and not only improve your existing talent pool but also attract the best and brightest from your competitors as they lag behind in the struggle for great leadership talent. This article originally appeared on SmartBrief. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Study finds that womens voices are lower now than they used to be

Study finds that women's voices are lower now than they used to be Study finds that women's voices are lower now than they used to be In the underrated film I Feel Pretty that came out this spring, Academy-award nominee Michelle Williams showed she has got comedic chops too when she played the role of a glamorous CEO of a beauty empire called LeClaire Cosmetics. Williams looks every bit the part as she is beautiful, fashionable, graceful and appealingly aloof but then she opens her mouth. Williams gave her character, Avery LeClaire, the voice of one that resembles a chipmunk and it was brilliant.Over the course of the film we start to see Avery unravel as she is put under major pressure by her grandmother (played by notoriously low-voiced Lauren Hutton) who started the company and in one stress-eating scene she confesses to Amy Schumer’s character, who has become her Jiminy Cricket in some ways, that she has tried everything (well really just voice lessons) to fix her high-pitched voice because she knows it underwrites her commanding presence.Women speak at lower pitches todayThe problem seems to be that Avery wa s born in the wrong era. New research shows that women’s voices today are significantly deeper than previous generations and that is because of roles shifting and power dynamics.  Cecilia Pemberton at the University of South Australia  studied the voices of two groups of Australian women  between the ages of 18â€"25 years old. They compared recordings of women speaking in 1945 with ones of women talking in the 1990s. It was found that the “fundamental frequency” had dropped by 23 Hz over those 50 years. The average woman’s voice they looked at went from 229 Hz to 206 Hz.This isn’t surprising as a lower voice is unequivocally considered more dominating. Chimpanzees and frogs know this and do this and so do humans it seems. You can have the right body language, clothing and be as smart as a whip but if your voice resembles that of a muppet, people will automatically undercut you. Perhaps women’s voices are evolving this way as a survival of the fittest type of strategy.I F eel Pretty screenwriter  Marc Silverstein said of Williams’ character, “The voice was written and the part is done as written, but the voice was hers,” Silverstein said. “It was just written super high with a vocal fry, and kind of based on someone that she knows and I know. Just someone we know that’s really successful and smart, but when they get up to talk, you’re like, ‘Whoa. Where did that come from?’ ”This is why we saw Margaret Thatcher take lessons to lower the pitch of her voice and she went on to win her election and become Prime Minister.  Chris Delaney,  a career coach and the author of  The 73 Rules for Influencing  the Interview using  Psychology, NLP and Hypnotic Persuasion Techniques said in an interview, “We have all heard that people form an opinion  about you in the first 5-10 minutes of meeting you, this is true but the  time frame is closer to 5-10 seconds.  When using a baby voice or even when you have a baby face, people will feel  an insti nct to mother you, to protect you.“This can be an advantage and  disadvantage. An advantage can be that you are protected after making a  costly mistake at work, the natural instinct to protect and nurture a baby  is projected on to your colleagues who will do anything to keep you safe. But what when you are ready for that promotion? Your colleagues and  managers already have a prejudice about you; they have stereotyped you as some who needs support from others. With this reputation, you will find it  hard to succeed in any promotional interview.”The Catch-22Interestingly it has also been found that voice pitches for women vary between countries. Women in the Netherlands tend to have deeper voices than those in Japan signifying how power is valued in certain countries versus others. However, before you go trying to speak lower, researcher  Joey Cheng of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign told The BBC, “While lower voices â€" and other assertive behavior in general â €" effectively signal and assert power and authority in women, as it does in men, it might also have the unintended effect of undermining how well liked they are.” Ay there’s the rub.

In What Countries Do Police Not Carry Guns

In What Countries Do Police Not Carry Guns In What Countries Do Police Not Carry Guns In the United States, police and firearms seemingly go hand in hand. When uses of force by police in the U.S. make news, questions often arise as to why and whether or not our officers should carry guns. The carrying of firearms by law enforcement officers is not unique to American policing, though. Many people assume that most European police dont wear guns. The majority of continental police agencies issue firearms to their officers. In fact, the nations in which police do not routinely carry guns are few and far between. There are only a few countries where you wont find officers with handguns on their hips. Though not exhaustive, heres an overview of the few nations where cops dont carry guns. United Kingdom English Bobbies - so named for the patron of the modern police force Sir Robert Peel - are famously firearm-free. Their counterparts in two of the other three countries to make up the U.K. arent gun toters, either. Only the police in Northern Ireland routinely carry guns while on patrol. It isnt to say U.K. officers are defenseless, or even unarmed. They still carry many of the other typical police gadgets - baton, pepper spray and handcuffs, for instance - to help them perform their duties. In the event that a situation requires the threat of deadly force, police in Great Britain and Northern Ireland can call on the assistance of Authorized Firearms Officers to respond. These officers have special training in the use of firearms and are ready to respond when the situation calls for it. Norway In Norway, routine patrol officers may keep firearms with them, but you wont see them on their belt. Rather than carrying guns on their person, Norwegian police maintain their weapons unloaded and sealed in their patrol cars or locked up at a station armory. In the event a situation calls for the use of firearms by the police, officers must get authorization from their chief to deploy them. Ireland In the Republic of Ireland, uniformed members of the police force - An Garda Síochna (Guardians of the Peace) - dont carry firearms at all, nor are they authorized to use them. Instead, members of special divisions such as those assigned to counter-terrorism or emergency response units are issued firearms. These officers dont wear regular uniforms, so as not to be confused with regular patrol officers. Iceland Icelandic police do not carry firearms with them, and few carry them in their patrol cars. Like many other similarly equipped agencies, special response units are available to use firearms if needed. Unlike in the U.K. and Ireland, all officers are trained to use firearms. New Zealand In New Zealand, patrol officers dont wear guns on their hips, and most dont carry them in their cars. Dignitary protection units and airport security officers are routinely armed, but the rank and file arent. Instead, a special Armed Offender Unit is available to respond to incidents which may require the use of firearms. Certain New Zealand police officers - sergeants and other supervisors, K-9 units and criminal investigations units, for example - are authorized to carry weapons in securely locked gun cabinets in their patrol vehicles and distribute them to other police if a potentially threatening situation warrants it and upon the authorization of a commanding officer. Firearms or No, Officers Are Ready to Help Despite the close association with police and firearms around the world, its not the weapon that makes the officer. Instead, police officers are united by their dedication to protecting the public and providing meaningful service to their communities. No matter how theyre armed, police have plenty of tools at their disposal to help them serve and protect. No matter where you are in the world, if you have a desire to help others and protect your community, you may want to consider becoming a police officer.

However, his 120-hour spree was mostly motivated by failure, as Tesla “running out of money” at the time. And Kai-Fu Lee, a Silicon Vally wunderkind â€" former Apple employee and former president of Google China â€" said his epic workaholism ended when he was diagnosed with cancer, reported Quartz at Work. How to Train your Recruiters to Be Better Listeners

How to Train your Recruiters to Be Better Listeners How to Train your Recruiters to Be Better Listeners How to Train your Recruiters to Be Better Listeners Rossheim Theres broad consensus among recruitment executives that 2016 is the year of listening attentive and active listening. Why now? With growing competition for in-demand talent and an escalating emphasis on selling hard-to-fill positions, recruiters must listen more carefully to candidate as never before. Listening is the core skill of recruiting, says James Wright, partner at Bridge Technical Talent. You cant understand what the candidate wants or has to offer if you dont listen clearly. Problem is, many recruiters, maybe especially those with sales experience in other industries, believe its better to give words than to receive them. In our training we joke that recruiters have two settings: talking, or waiting to talk, says Karen Schmidt, managing director at Sanford Rose Associates. Heres how to train your recruiters to listen better which will make them better closers than their less attuned competition. Teach recruiters that listening is the key to selling. Recruiters crave efficiency, so they should appreciate that carefully listening will save them many long trips to dead ends. You need to communicate that, without effectively qualifying the candidate much of which involves critically listening efforts to sell are a waste of time, says Wright. Cultivate a nonjudgmental approach. Perhaps the toughest challenge for recruiters is to refrain from instantly assessing a candidates fitness for a given opening. The human instinct is to process every bit of information and make a judgment, says Schmidt. So instead, we focus on listening without deciding, on resisting the urge to jump to a conclusion or categorize the candidate based on other candidates. You break down what to listen for on a granular level. Train recruiters to listen and look for the unspoken. The most successful recruiters have learned to watch for the candidates body language and note the topics that candidates choose to leave untouched. I listen to my candidates fears and insecurities and make them feel confident, says Marissa Klein, executive vice president at search firm Choice Fashion Media. Ask new recruiters to observe experienced recruiters. A recruiter with potential will learn a lot by observing how more experienced colleagues listen to, and draw out, candidates. When someone starts here, we have them sit in on each senior recruiters interviews, to see their different ways of working, says Klein. It helps to watch how more senior people handle bumps along the way. Afterward, I debrief them, talk to them about the way things were done. Role-play conversations with candidates. First-hand observation is good, but its not enough to help recruiters develop the habits of active listening. Thats where role-playing comes in. For training, we give recruiters a job description and have them pick up the phone and call one of our trainers to do a mock interview and engage them in the opportunity, says Dennis Theodorou, vice president of global operations at JMJ Phillip Group. Interview the recruiter about the candidate interview. To test the recruiters listening, and to engage him or her with other stakeholders in the hiring process, question the candidate about how the interview went. Have a system where the next person after the recruiter to interview the candidate asks the recruiter specific open-ended questionsthat cant be found on the resume, says Wright. Require recruiters to synthesize their knowledge of candidates. Its one thing to interview a candidate and check off boxes corresponding to their answers and quite another to pull together those responses to arrive at a meaningful portrait of the candidate. Wright advises: Ask your recruiter: If you had to throw all the different motivators in the air job satisfaction, skills development, compensation, commute, quality of life, title/position, company prospects tell me how youd order those motivators for this candidate and why. If the recruiter cant answer adequately, have them do a follow-up call to get more information and really listen to the responses. Demonstrate that candidate engagement spells long-term success. Candidates who feel they have been heard will be much better prepared to make a positive impression on your clients. When we listen and build rapport, candidates step in with both feet, says Theodorou. Hire recruiters for learning and listening aptitude. Some aspects of listening are teachable, others may be a matter of unalterable temperament: you have it or you dont. It pays to test for ability to listen when youre hiring recruiters. If we hire candidates who want to continuously learn, they can be trained more easily, says Theodorou.

4 Tips for a Healthier Work-life Balance

4 Tips for a Healthier Work-life Balance 4 Tips for a Healthier Work-life Balance For a lot of us, finding a healthy work-life balance can seem almost impossible. Managing work responsibilities with family responsibilities while trying to fit in a social life can make anyone feel overwhelmed and stressed. The pressure to succeed in work can make it hard to create a balance between your work and home life. However, creating a healthy work-life balance can increase your productivity and work performance. Here are 4 tips for a healthier work-life balance. 4. Create a routine It’s easy to get into a habit of letting work dictate your schedule. I had this problem at a previous job of mine. I would let projects sidetrack me, and it kept me working late hours. I would let clients schedule meetings with me after regular business hours and end up working 10 hour days on top of an hour commute. I quickly found myself feeling burnt out and depressed over never having time for my family. That’s because I let work dictate my schedule and didn’t stick to a routine. To ensure you don’t make the same mistake, create a scheduled routine for your time. Be intentional about your work schedule, making sure you are have built in breaks for yourself and establishing a time for you to leave each day. Be sure to include downtime and hobbies into your routine. While you may not get to do a hobby-related activity every day, you should give yourself at least 30 minutes of personal downtime every day. Once you create a routine, make sure to honor it. If you say you want to attend a weekly yoga class twice a week at 5:45 pm, honor that commitment. Unless it’s an emergency, don’t allow yourself to work through your downtime. 3. Unplug from the office I once had a boss warn me to leave work at work. She knew the temptation of answering client calls and emails off work hours, and she warned me about making myself too accessible. Unfortunately, I didn’t listen at first. If a client called or emailed me after work hours, I found myself answering back right then. Clients loved this, but soon, I felt like I was always at work. For many workers, technology has made it easier for us to take work with us. No matter where you are, whether you are at home or at the store or even on vacation, the office can be right next to you on your phone or tablet. In order to create a healthier work-life balance, learn to unplug from the office. Once you are home for the day, leave work-related business alone. This means don’t answer work-related emails or messages while you are at home, out to dinner, or on vacation. Disconnect from the office and enjoy your life outside of work. Unplugging from the office will allow you to fully connect with your family and friends and help you enjoy your time off. 2. Take Care of Your Health When you are busy or overwhelmed, it can be easy to let your health take a back seat. When I was working long hours and commuting long hours, I stopped taking care of my health. I ate out more. I didn’t exercise as much. I didn’t sleep as much as I should. After a while, I just felt terrible. I was tired and sick all the time, and my work suffered. I realized that if I didn’t make time for my health, I would continue to struggle. So, I joined a gym and went every day before work. I planned my meals carefully, and I got into a good sleep schedule. I suddenly had more energy in the morning and was more productive at work. I was happier and able to get more done. Taking care of your health can have a significant positive impact on your work-life balance. Exercising can reduce your stress, lift your mood, and give you more energy. Fueling your body with good food makes you less likely to feel drained and sick all time. Developing a good sleep schedule makes it easier to get through your day without having to pound multiple cups of coffee. Set time aside to make sure you are taking care of your body and your health. You will feel better, and you will take less sick days, which your employer will enjoy. 1. Be willing to express your needs. The most significant tip I can give you for a healthier work-life balance is learn to be willing to express your needs. A year or so ago, I went through a loss in my family. After only a few days off, I rushed back into work, trying to distract myself from my grief. I didn’t want my employer to know that I was struggling, so I just kept working. But one day, I couldn’t do it anymore. I was miserable and in pain. I actually thought about quitting. But instead, I went to my boss and expressed that I needed time off for my mental health. She was understanding and gave me the time off I needed. In order to create a healthy work-life balance, you need to be aware of your needs and be able to express them. Examine what you need to feel balanced and fulfilled and don’t be afraid to approach the subject with your employer. If you want to leave by a specific time each day to spend time with your kids, express that. Be open and honest with your boss about your needs and see what you can work out.

If you fake this a lot at work, you may develop a drinking problem

If you fake this a lot at work, you may develop a drinking problem If you fake this a lot at work, you may develop a drinking problem Few things are as exhausting as pretending to be entertained by a self-absorbed dud. Unfortunately, some Americans occupy career fields that encourage them to smile through awful joke after awful joke until they punch out and swan dive into whiskey river.Drinking after a long awful shift is a pretty ubiquitous hobby, and now a new study published in the Journal of Occupational  Health Psychology aims to unpack the professional expectations that energize it.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Fake smiles equal real drunkResearchers from Penn State University and The Unversity of Buffalo reviewed data from phone interviews of over a thousand Americans that work in fields that require them to habitually interact with the public, namely  teachers, nurses, and food service workers. Additional data was analyzed of nearly 3,000 participants of a larger survey funded by The National In stitutes  of Health.Participants were questioned about how often they engage in what the study referred to as surface acting at work, how often they drank after their shifts, and how much autonomy they feel they have at their respective jobs.Surface acting is the kind of emotional labor acting in which a person has to fake emotions to meet certain social or work obligations, some of which include subduing personal turmoil, suppressing physical gestures or curbing verbal objections.According to the researchers, their study disclosed a “robust link”  between frequently faking positive emotions or suppressing negative emotions during work and heavier drinking after work.Alicia Grandey, professor of psychology at Penn State, explained,  â€œFaking and suppressing emotions with customers was related to drinking beyond the stress of the job or feeling negative.” Grandley continues, “It wasn’t just feeling bad that makes them reach for a drink. Instead, the more they have to cont rol negative emotions at work, the less they are able to control their alcohol intake after work.”Grandey went on to make an interesting postulation about a potential contributing factor. Because many service industry jobs present monetary incentives for advertising a warm disposition, employees are often encouraged to subdue their frustration to an unhealthy  degree.   Overriding our “natural tendencies,” for an extended period time can wear on us-it’s a draining procedure.Grandey concludes, “Employers may want to consider allowing employees to have a little more autonomy at work like they have some kind of choice on the job,” Grandey said. “And when the emotional effort is clearly linked to financial or relational rewards, the effects aren’t so bad.”Next time a customer says a dumb thing, feel free to make Jim Halprin face-do it for your liver.
